At first glance, the Body Scan looks like a premium bathroom scale. However, its design is significantly more complex than standard smart scales. The platform includes a reinforced glass surface, a large hidden display, and a retractable handle connected via a cable. This handle is not just an aesthetic choice—it contains electrodes that allow for upper-body bioelectrical measurements and ECG recordings.
The scale surface itself contains multiple conductive pads that measure lower-body impedance. Together, the handle and base enable full-body segmental analysis: arms, legs, and torso are analyzed independently rather than as a single aggregated value.
The device connects via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, syncing data automatically to the Withings Health Mate ecosystem. The internal hardware includes high-precision load sensors, multi-frequency impedance analyzers, and embedded processing units that pre-filter raw biometric signals before sending them to the cloud for interpretation.

One of the most important features of the Withings Body Scan is its multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis system. Traditional smart scales use single-frequency BIA, which sends a weak electrical current through the body to estimate body fat percentage, muscle mass, and water content.
However, single-frequency systems often lack precision because they cannot differentiate effectively between intracellular and extracellular water or distinguish tissue types across different body segments.
Withings improves this by using multi-frequency BIA, which sends electrical signals at multiple frequencies through different body regions. This allows the device to estimate:
This segmentation is particularly useful for athletes, rehabilitation patients, and individuals tracking asymmetric muscle development or recovery after injury.
