The Hype About Organic Food
Fruits and vegetables have always been at the center of a healthy lifestyle. That hasn’t changed. What has changed are the practices of their agro-industry.
Think about the industries that have changed the most. Agriculture and farming might be the most extreme. You can’t escape the chemicals; there’s weed killer, pesticide, fertilizer. The big kicker that really changed everything is the genetically modified organisms, GMOs. Basically, GMOs make it so that you can still have pesticide on the crops after you’ve sprayed it. Call me crazy, but chemicals on or in food can’t be a big secret, right? What really makes it even crazier is the process of thinking and farming in the opposite direction.
That makes good sense of the idea of organic farming. I get it, it may feel like a step in the wrong direction, but in fact it’s a step forward towards farming’s natural roots. What obviously first comes to mind is how much organic farming is less reliant on farming’s invention, synthetic inputs.
Some reports published by GMI Research put the predicted growth of the organic food market in Germany to a CAGR of over 20% from 2024-2031. If a forecast like that doesn’t make it clear how much people have been looking for foods that are less manipulated and more natural than the foods we currently have to choose from, then I don’t know what would.
How Defined are “Organic” & “Organic Foods?”
Unfortunately, the term “organic farming” is thrown around a lot, so much so that people use the term “organic” for almost everything. What is even funnier to me is the fact that when you really start breaking it down, there isn’t much to it.
With organic farming, no synthetic farming related chemicals are used in farming. That means no artificial fertilizers are used, no pesticides, and the food is free of GMOs. To farm organically means that you have to put a little more work in; often, you may need to mix the soil with natural healthier organic soil, or manure, and, with a little luck, you can encourage a bunch of worms and insect life to come and stay.
Even the way that organic farms use pest control is drastically different. The goal of idea behind organic farming is that the farming of the masses is a race against nature, which is so perfectly articulated in the saying, “slow and steady wins the race.”
